Dear Midlothian Middle Families –

We are writing to let you know about a change we’re proposing for our school parent group. Later this month, we’re going to discuss and vote on changing our PTA into a PTO.

The meeting will be May 30th, 6pm.

For the most part, if this change happens, you won’t see much of a difference at all in how our group operates and what we do for the school. We’ll still focus on trying to make Midlothian Middle a great community for our kids, teachers and families. There will be some behind-the-scenes/technical changes, but we’ll take care of those at the Board level.

We’ll discuss in more detail at the meeting, but the biggest reasons for the proposed change are:

Keep all dues here at school. You may not know this, but we actually don’t get to keep all of your PTA dues dollars here at school. We have to pay $3.75 (note: state+ national) for each member out to higher levels of PTA. Also, the National PTA is looking to increase their dues which could make our total pay out to $5.25 per membership. We think we can do better using those dollars right here at school. This year we contributed $1800.
Independence. PTOs are independent, and we can set policies and procedures that work specifically for our school.
Logical. We do not take advantage of programs offered through PTA to warrant an $1800 annual contribution at this time. We had 6 participants in the Reflections program, 2 in the Power Plates program that we are aware of and zero entries for the Citizenship Essay contest to our knowledge. No one has volunteered to research possible grants offered and we had only 32 votes for the Proposed Legislative Program. Certainly, if interest were to arise in these, we can create new programs to replace those offered if we have a volunteer to do so.
